Directions to Trails End Inn

From New York City and other points South

Join the New York Thruway. At Albany, exit the New York Thruway at Exit 24, pay your toll and take I-87 North (no tolls!) towards Montreal. Exit at Exit 30 (milepost 104) and turn left at the bottom of the exit ramp and follow signs toward Lake Placid and Keene Valley. 11 miles from the exit, enter Keene Valley and slow to 35 mph. Look for the big Trail’s End Inn sign on the left, just after Trailhead parking for the Rooster Comb Trail. Turn left into the driveway and continue 1/3 mile back to the inn.

From Montreal and other points North

Take I-87, south to exit 30. Turn right at the off-ramp, and follow signs toward Lake Placid and Keene Valley. 11 miles from the exit, enter Keene Valley and slow to 35 mph. Look for the big Trail’s End Inn sign on the left, just after Trailhead parking for the Rooster Comb Trail. Turn left into the driveway and continue 1/3 mile back to the inn.

Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo and points West

– Take the New York Thruway east to Exit 33. Take Route 365 east toward Rome and Holland Patent and Hinckley. 365 ends at Rte 8. Turn left onto Route 8 east toward Speculator, then Wevertown and Riparius. Cross the Hudson River at a one lane bridge; about 2 miles past the river, take US Route 9 north towards Pottersville and Interstate 87 north. Join I-87 north at Exit 26, continue north to Exit 30. Take Exit 30, turn left at bottom of ramp and follow signs to Lake Placid and Keene Valley. 11 miles from the exit, enter Keene Valley and slow to 35 mph. Look for the big Trail’s End Inn sign on the left, just after Trailhead parking for the Rooster Comb Trail. Turn left into the driveway and continue 1/3 mile back to the inn.

From Binghamton, Ithaca, Harrisburg PA, or Scranton PA

Take Interstate 88 east from Binghamton. Joint the New York Thruway east for two exits (you take a ticket, but there’s no toll due) to Exit 24. Take I-87 North (no tolls!) towards Montreal. Exit at Exit 30 (milepost 104) and turn left at the bottom of the exit ramp and follow signs toward Lake Placid and Keene Valley. 11 miles from the exit, enter Keene Valley and slow to 35 mph. From Boston, Providence, Springfield and other points EAST

Join the Boston Turnpike westbound and continue into New York, where it becomes the New York Thruway extension. (You can also exit at Interstate 90 west if you’d like to see downtown Albany. I-90 will join I-87 north just past downtown.) Take the New York Thruway north towards Albany (just 3 exits) Exit the New York Thruway at Exit 24, pay your toll and take I-87 North (no tolls!) towards Montreal. Exit at Exit 30 (milepost 104) and turn left at the bottom of the exit ramp and follow signs toward Lake Placid and Keene Valley. 11 miles from the exit, enter Keene Valley and slow to 35 mph. Look for the big Trail’s End Inn sign on the left, just after Trailhead parking for the Rooster Comb Trail. Turn left into the driveway and continue 1/3 mile back to the inn.

From Vermont, New Hampshire, or Maine

Take Interstate 89 north towards Burlington. As you approach Burlington, take exit at I-189 west which dead ends on Route 7. Take Route 7 south to Vergennes. In Vergennes, takes Route 22A to Addison, then Route 17 to the Champlain Bridge. (all these turns will be marked as “Bridge to New York”)

In New York, on the other side of the bridge, turn north (right) on Route 9N to Port Henry and Westport. Follow 9N on to Elizabethtown and finally down a big hill where it intersects Route 73. Turn left, follow Route 73 3 miles into Keene Valley. At the far end of town, look for our large sign on the right, just past the Mobil station and the Book Store.

From Vermont, Alternate: South of Burlington,
in Charlotte is the Ferry to New York. Turn right and follow the signs. For times and rates visit the Lake Champlain Ferries site. It lands in Essex. From there follow the signs for Elizabethtown and follow the directions above.

From Ottawa

Take 417 east to Exit 58. Take 138 south to Cornwall, cross the bridge to the United States. In the U.S., take 37 east to Fort Covington and Westvale towards Malone. In Malone, take 30 South towards Paul Smiths. At Paul Smiths, take 86 east, first to Saranac Lake. In Saranac Lake, take route 86 east to Lake Placid. Approaching Lake Placid, bear right on the bypass road (Old Military Road) toward Keene, Mt. VanHoevenberg and the ski jumps (unless you want to pass through scenic Lake Placid. In that case, follow 86 to the other side of town, then turn right on route 73 toward Keene) Join route 73 at the ski jumps and follow 73 through Keene to Keene Valley. Pass through Keene Valley until you see the Noonmark diner on the left and a Mobil gas station and a bookstore on the right. Our driveway is marked with a big sign just past the bookstore. Trail’s End Inn is 1/3 mile at the end of the driveway.

From Toronto

Take 401 east to Kingston then Gananoque. Exit at 661, south to the Thousand Islands bridge and the United States. In the U.S., take Interstate 81 south towards Watertown. Take exit 48, route 342 to Black River. In Black River, join Route 3 east towards Great Bend, Natural Bridge, Fine, Cranberry Lake, Tupper Lake to Saranac Lake. In Saranac Lake, take route 86 east to Lake Placid. Approaching Lake Placid, bear right on the bypass road (Old Military Road) toward Keene, Mt. VanHoevenberg and the ski jumps (unless you want to pass through scenic Lake Placid. In that case, follow 86 to the other side of town, then turn right on route 73 toward Keene) Join route 73 at the ski jumps and follow 73 through Keene to Keene Valley. Private pilots: There is a grass strip without services here in the valley (Marcy Field), or you may wish to land at Lake Placid, a full-service FBO with car rental available.
